Tuesday April 21st… all the chapter 5 of A SCREAM IN THE DUNE.

The Secret

“When they discovered the key of DNA in order to cure most of the world’s greatest diseases, but especially in order to program new born brains, I blessed the time when I was born.  On one hand, hope was high and we again dreamed of making a better world.  A world free of desease and without infirmity overpowering poor victims. Unfortunately, there were those that wanted to use the genetic science only to create a perfect army, a perfect soldier, a perfect student.  It is then that I called you “Tony,” fighting against your federative father who insisted on calling you ASTER 009.  My dear Tony, your biological parents are still alive today.  You have the sacred duty to find them, as soon as you are a little older and able to consult the universe data that was hidden somewhere in the mastermind of the universal IHDM.  All I can tell you is they loved you so much that the Federation had to transfer them somewhere else in order to be able to put you in the service of the present power.  You were taken away from them for the needs of the Federation.  If they have left me near you it is because they thought that the old man I am, even a little insane as they think, would be unoffensive to your education, the education standards of the Federation.  At least that is what they think.”

At the time the child was going to say something, the old Albert coughed violently, bent down and lay on the ground. Tony tried to lift him and pressed him to his young child’s chest.  Leaning against the wall of the small cave, Tony could support, without too much effort, the skinny body of his grandfather, totally collapsed in his small arms.  The old man was almost nothing but skin and bones, a soul captive of a body, worn by challenges, diseases and the length of time.  The breathing of the old man was nothing more than a frail whisper.  He looked at his little boy, equipped with his protective filtersuit and said to him, on a barely audible voice “Do not forget the golden sand, the stars, the songs of the birds, the emerald sea . .  .”

Tony shook him violently.  With all the energy of his ten years’ he tried to drag his grandfather out of the cave.  When his own strength failed him, he sat back where he was, gently caressing with his glove the face of his friend.  In his child’s mind, he could no longer recognize himself; neither did he know why he felt the need to caress his grandfather’s cheeks.  The only thing he knew was that he was feeling desperate.

For the first time in his young life, he was starting to understand the true meaning of the word “friend”, although he was not even sure of that.  The only thing he knew was that he couldn’t let his grandfather die like this.  He didn’t want him to die.  He didn’t want him to go away.  He was feeling his throat tightening and a strange emotion was reaching into his mind.  The more he tried to fight it, the stronger it became and, in a kind of panic mixed with abandon, with all the power of his lungs, he cried “Pappy, Pappy, please don’t die, please don’t leave me.”  The thermostatic balance of his protective suit was no longer functioning.  It could not withstand the revolt of all his body’s cells, now at a boiling state.  Sweat was invading his filtersuit, and his visor was almost entirely covered with mist. Without knowing where the words were coming from, at the moment when tears ran down his cheeks, he screamed: “Pappy, I LOVE YOU!”

Painfully, Albert opened his old and tired eyes, rested his head on the chest of the young child who was tenderly holding him, and then, for the last time, he closed his eyelids, while on his lips a beautiful smile suddenly appeared.

- Dis grand-père, pourquoi n'as tu rien fait quand on détruisait ton univers?

- Oh !

Sunday April 19th… the continuation and end of chapter 4 of  A SCREAM IN THE DUNE.

Tony listened with interest, but without emotion. A part of his mind was telling him to believe his grandfather, and the other side of his brain, more rational and controlled, was suggesting him to filter all this information.  He thought that all his grandfather was telling him could also be wrong, or worse, simply untrue.  He remembered his virtual teachers had told him not to believe the stories of these poor, old nostalgic people from the past.  Pure fabrication they were saying.  However, another thing worried him a little more .  .  .  his grandfather had an extinct voice and he was breathing painfully while telling him his story.  His grandfather’s skin was pale and covered with eruptions.  His voice trembled and each sentence seemed to be painfully pronounced.

“Pappy, let’s go back to the Bubble.  You will die here.  You do not have a filtersuit and you are seriously sick.”

“No Tony” replied Albert.  “For once I call upon your rational spirit.  I want to die here.  I am old and embarrassing to your generation.  I am expensive to the Collective Bubble as you say, and since you have let me tell you my version of history, I just wish to die in peace. Believe me grandson, my mind is not digressing, it is just time for me to go.  During all these years, I have clung to life, waiting for the time you became sufficiently old enough to understand what I had to tell you.  I truly believe I reached that point today. My time on Earth is done, and it is time for me to leave this planet my little boy.  I know I am leaving you a painful testimony.  I hope that it will generate in your conscience a path of freedom and justice, a balance between these two entities and, especially, the respect of all that is still alive on this soiled ground, including humans.”

“.  . .  but I do not want you to die grandfather” begged Tony.

“and why .  . .  should I follow your advice, young man?”

“Because it would not be .  .  . suitable” Tony stoically responded.

The old Albert would have let himself die at once if he had heard the little boy say “Because I love you Pappy.” Unfortunately love, this irrational feeling as the Federation used to call it, had been stripped from Tony’s genetic bank.

“Pappy, why did you not do anything when your Universe was getting destroyed?”

“Oh, I did what I could.  There were not many of us who saw that all was going to be destroyed.  Those of us who were seeing this were treated as dreamers, ‘cloud diggers’, unproductive and negative people as they used to nickname us.  However, what we were seeing was just reality.  A simple logical deduction, almost mathematical, and the truth was there for all who wanted to see.   Planning the future over several decades was badly seen by those who wanted immediate profits.  And those were our rulers.  To seek a healthy balance between the freedom of the individuals, the security of the community and the protection of the universe was seen as an abdication toward the obligations of a generation yet to come.  It was hard to find a more twisted perception.  That was how the power in place treated those of us who dared to question the system.  All hidden behind a mask of goodwill, some of those in the position of power were having a hard time hiding their will of domination, of control over all human kind. Damned was the one who planted a lemon tree in his yard in a district where all the other houses had planted apple trees.  He was immediately risking a fine, the loss of his house, or worse, prison.”

“Adding to that was the arrival of the first computers, and the discovery of the immense capacity of personal information stored in data banks all across the world, a gold mine for those in power. The situation and the historical context were becoming too inviting for those who dreamt of total world power.  A huge monopoly of land, money, human work and displacement and, the possibility of even controlling a human’s mind, was too much of a temptation to resist for those already in control of humanity.”

“You know, the lobbyists, the trading of different personal advantages, the sifting of the truth, the casting of planned information, were not invented by those of your generation my dear grandson.  I would even say that your current leaders learned well their lessons from their elders.  In all cases they were not the inventors of such calamities.”

“.  . .  and you, Pappy, how did you fight them, these unjust men?”

Albert smiled.  From the glance of the old man, sparks spouted out.  He already knew he had just scored some points.  His grandson, Tony, had just said “these unjust men .  .  .”

“So Pappy, are you finally going to tell me how you fought them?”

“By writing” answered a troddened Albert.

“And why by writing?”

“To be able to look at myself in the mirror each morning, and not to be ashamed of the face I see in front of me.”

“I do not understand” said Tony, confused.

“Don’t worry, you will understand one day . .  .  perhaps. That has something to do with forgiveness.”

“At one moment in their lifetime, all humans, men or women, look at themselves in the mirror and see differently what the glass is throwing back at them.  Some panic because they can’t support the image the mirror is returning to them. Others are so scared that they choose the path of self-destruction, while a minority decide to change their life completely.  Those are the ones who become able to change their way of living, their values and their priorities.  Alas! The majority avoid looking in the mirror, preferring to avoid their own truth.”

“And how did you manage to survive?” kept asking a more passionate Tony.

“I don’t really know.  Many things or souvenirs of my life are lost somewhere in the bottom of my memory.  I know that at the time when all believed the end of the world had arrived, I constantly repeated to myself a sentence which I had read somewhere in an old book.”

“In an old book?”

“Oh yes! An old book which no longer exist today . .  .  unless our current leaders have hidden it.  That book was called The Bible.”

“And what was this sentence?”

“Even at that time, I could not remember it in its integrity, but I have always remembered the essence of its meaning. It went something like ‘When the time comes, and thousands fall at your left and ten thousand at your right, look towards the sky .  . .  and you will be saved.’”

Tony was speechless and Albert continued.

“I repeated this sentence to myself each and every time terror seized me, at the worst moments of my life, until the fear left me.  Today, you see, I am not afraid of anything at all, I am not even afraid of death. Maybe that is why I feel now is the time to reveal to you a great secret.  A secret you must know.  When you get older, and you consider the time favorable, you will have to free yourself from this secret.  To break the chains of it and to spread its contents everywhere you are able to. Perhaps then you will truly understand the true meaning of the word ‘freedom’.”

vendredi 17 avril 2020

Pourquoi tu me racontes tout cela?

Certains  jours, je me demande  pourquoi j’ai survécu, quelle force m’a  protégé.

Friday April 17… the continuation of A SCREAM IN THE DUNE. (Still in chapter 4).

“However, there is something which remains documented and historical.  The company responsible for this catastrophe barely received punishment.  After many transactions and court decisions, although the government spent more than $45 million of the taxpayers’ money to stop the PCB spill, the concerned multi-national company who was responsible for the catastrophe, paid only a small portion of that amount.  Moreover, it had the right to recuperate its boat, still salvageable on a dry dock.  Qualified by some journalists as ‘A Corporate Bum’s Company’, reality showed that what the government, and the society in general, did at that time was merely a slap on the hand for all the mess.  The worse thing was that almost no one cared, which was a sign of the times to come.”

“Some Protective Environmental Associations didn’t really care either.  In fact, they publicly congratulated the authorities and the multi-national company involved for the beautiful work carried out by the aforementioned multi-national company and government representatives.  Later, as if by chance, some of these same people found themselves at the head of almost all the political and economic organizations of the Islands.  Although many of them were probably very honest and sincere in their political advance, the worst of them took almost total control on all decisions concerning the freedom of the citizens, the protection of their environment, their right of freedom to choose and the limits of this same freedom.  Out of their select group, no one could pretend having an ecologist philosophy.  You had to agree with them totally, with all their ideas or projects.  Otherwise, you were just part of a crowd to be disciplined. Very quickly came the day that in order to build even a simple cottage in which to store garden tools, it was mandatory that every citizen request permission from those holders of public administration, in order to have the privilege to build something on land which had belonged to them for many generations.  Also, some very strict standards were accompanying what some regarded as privileges granted to the inhabitants and owners of these parcels of land.”
“Under the excuse (relatively well-financed by the citizens’ taxes) that they wanted from now on to protect the future of the population, these people gradually took control of all the decisions having a direct effect on the life of the Community.  The situation became critical to such a point that no one dared to raise their voice if they did not agree, out of the fear of having to undergo the consequences of their opinions.  Fathers of families and home working mothers kept silent because they did not want to decrease the chances of their children obtaining work in that society, precisely because work was the only insurance to survive in such a world.  The thirst for power of these people destroyed, in a score of years, the beautiful freedom which had existed on the Islands.  In a very short time, these sons and daughters of the dark, succeeded in making almost all citizens believe they were not qualified enough, and too unconscious themselves of the environmental problems, to know the beneficial or evil limits of their daily gestures toward nature. Presenting themselves as absolute defenders of the Planet, they quickly took control of the most fundamental freedoms of the Community.  During this time, the great multi-national trusts continued to pollute the Earth. More freely than ever, they continued to build bigger vehicles and bigger factories, which created more pollution and, when they were stopped in their Earth massacres, they just built more and more in under-developed countries, making more and more profit at the expense of our poor planet Earth.  People were maintained, and even constricted, in their own country, but money had no boundaries.  So those now very numerous ‘Corporate Bums’ were free to make more and more profit, independent of the consequences of their acts.  Curiously, turning their back on these monster-killers of planets, the presumedly-protective of this one, devoted all their energies to supervise, check and control if the cottage of their neighbor was, in fact, the proper length and width permitted by the laws of the so-called ‘authorities.  It was the beginning of your world my little boy, it was the beginning of the “Great Cataclysm.”

“With this long story perhaps I lost your attention, somewhere in the course of this essay, my dear Tony.  So, do you still follow me?  .  . .  You are so silent!”

“Oh yes grandfather! Do not forget that I am ten years old and that I am very intelligent.”

So Albert pursued .  .  .

“Unfortunately, the situation on the Islands was just a smaller scale of what was occurring elsewhere in the World.  There were large and small wars almost everywhere.  Over-population threatened the Planet and, at the same time, the Asian continent engaged itself in an unrestrained race to productivity and wild capitalism.  Africa was dying of hunger and the AIDS virus, while the small countries of Europe were carrying out a war of indescribable atrocity.  The Americas collapsed under debt, whereas a minority of people became very rich, even hyper-rich.  The sale of weapons, the smuggling and, especially the control of power, fell into the hands of a minority.  During this time, the number of poor grew bigger and bigger, multiplying the rows of the disinherited on this Earth.  Religious fanaticism was presented as the only alternative to all these problems.  Not satisfied to handle the money and the bodies, ‘they’ tried, in an ultimate thirst, to handle the souls.  When all the structures in place collapsed like a house of cards, they placed the blame on the poor and unemployed of the Earth.”

Out of breath, Albert suddenly stop talking, his mouth open but voiceless, as if there was something else to say, but no words to express it.

Tony was amazed.  This was not what he had been taught about the old times.  All things were mixed up in his mind.  He no longer knew who or what to believe.  Was he going to stop the narration of his grandfather at once or was it necessary to let him finish his own interpretation of history?

In the same painful breath, Old Albert continued on his own track, forcing Tony to remain quiet.

“During this time, pollution, the real one, the one well hidden by the great multi-national trust, helped by some people only too glad to keep their mouths shut, continued its work of destruction. The O-zone layer almost disappeared from half the surface of the Earth, harvests were destroyed, famine invaded almost the totality of the sphere, viruses made devastation, and wars achieved the remainder.”

“Gradually, the problems disappeared with the reduction of humans, just like the virus which died with the body it contributed to kill.  The images of the past that your Federative tutors present to you through your virtual apparatus are drawn from this time young boy.  To better control your spirit, they only show you the dark side of the history from that time, the only side that relates to the consequences of human stupidity, however, they never show you the actions that led humanity toward that stupidity.  Indeed, how could the young people of your generation forgive the former leaders, and those of today, if they knew all this?  No wonder today’s leaders stay hidden, they are the direct descendants of the ones that so generously contributed to destroying the Universe.”

“Yes! But grandfather, from now on .  .  . since I  know what really happened in the past, I would also like to know why you were so insistent in telling me all of that.  After all, I am just a little boy.  What do you expect from me Pappy?” anxiously questioned Tony.

“I hope and pray that one day you will forgive me my boy” said  Albert.

“Forgive you, but why?” asked Tony.

“Because I am, to some extent, one of the last survivors of the first generation who contributed to create the untrue world in which you presently live.  Obviously, the concept of forgiveness is still a fuzzy concept in your mind.  I even wonder if they have not erased that principle in the genetic purification of your generation.  This is why I want to be sure that you know the existence, either naturally or by taught knowledge, that this noble gesture of forgiveness exists.  The day you will have assimilated all that, the day you will totally understand that act of mercy, you will also discover that forgiveness is a force of liberation, a force that belongs to freedom, a force that can only make you grow in wisdom. In a sense this force saved my life. It gave a direction to my poor miserable old soul.  This force will enable you to rebuild, with your means and in harmony with your surroundings, a world of which you do not yet have any idea.  A world that will be beautiful, a world of justice, a world that will belong to you and your generation of fellow citizens.  To achieve that you will have to acquire a very precious treasure. It is called the courage of your convictions.”

“Like the majority of humans of my generation, those in the World in which we now live simply do not want to know that there was once a nourishing Earth, a sea full of fish, a sparkling blue sky, nights where the celestial vault was full of stars, forests filled with animals and medicinal plants.  There were times of full moons on top of large fields and all over the oceans. Times of winds like a caress in the morning fog or in the spring foliage.  There were days where one could hear the songs of the birds, the language of the seagulls, the barking of the dogs, the meowing of the cats.  Those of my generation have destroyed all that pleasure. The ultimate punishment is that almost all of them died with the world they contributed to destroy.  Some days I wonder why I survived.  What force protected me?  And why?  I think I already know the answer, but my own death will be the only thing that will teach me the truth of it all.  After all, deep inside me, I know that issue will come very soon.”

* (… To be continued next Sunday April 19)… take care of all of you. GG
