Wednesday April 15, (The following of A SCREAM IN THE DUNE.)

“Oh, there were problems here and there, but the people who lived on this blessed ground never felt threatened.  When nature transformed itself into a storm and destroyed goods, and sometimes lives along its way, the community wiped their tears and built again.  With time and the mutual aid and support of each and every one, the tears were dried and the walls were restored.  It was a time of trust in what the old men used to call the ‘Divine Provider.’ That entity, or that term, was sometimes a little skimpy, but it referred to a great and divine power who directed the destiny of one and all.”

“In happiness, as in misfortune, freedom was almost sacred.  People could set up their houses, cottages, workshops, barns and/or shelters almost everywhere according to their needs.  Here was a cow pasture, a hayfield; there was an artisanal wharf on a ground point, an anchoring harbor for the fishing vessels.  It was a time where something that looked like anarchy was, in fact, beautiful harmony, created by simple needs and less greed. Harbors, shelters, fields, flowers and wild fruits grew and died with the rhythm of the seasons, the rhythm of simple happiness, formed with social canvas, one of these canvases that you so often admire at the Art Library Bubble .  .  .  of the past.”

Tony remained stoical and perplexed while listening to his grandfather.  Oh, he tried very hard to build the images Albert suggested to him.  He was certain that even his range of computerized colors could not render the accuracy of the images which fed the disturbed spirit of the old man.  In any event, putting aside the chromatic contribution of his personal computer, Tony could only refer to the colors that were surrounding him .  .  .  and everything was plus or minus .  .  . gray.

Painfully taking his breath, Albert continued.

“Unfortunately, like a virus of which one does not know the origin, a logic of destruction of this Universe was already well started. Here, it began with a boat loaded with heavy oil and bearing the name The Big Whale.  Being a towed barge, the ship accidentally sank, roughly twenty years before becoming the center of attention, during one of those frequent storms which were common on the Islands in those days.  All kept silent on this accident until a valorous veterinary surgeon found some birds, soaked with oil and dying, along one of the beach shores of the Islands.  He then sent some of the oil samples he had found, on the birds he treated and attempted to save, to a specialized lab.  It didn’t take long to realize that the oil mixture which was killing the birds was the same type of oil that sank with The Big Whale’s barge, more than twenty years before, now lying at more than two hundred feet at the bottom of the sea, sixty miles west of the Islands.  As a reward from the people who owed him for that wake-up call, and probably many saved lives in the future, he received only contempt and indifference. People don’t seem to forgive those who become the messengers of bad news.  Just like during the Greek Empire times, they would have killed the messenger instead of dealing with the bad news if they could have been able to do such a terrible thing.  Fortunately for the veterinarian doctor, he was living in a more ‘civilized’ period of time.  Tired and disappointed, he left the Islands and never returned.”

“For reasons, which you will perhaps one day discover, the men of my generation had become very malicious.  Even in our small villages things were spoiled.  People no longer helped one another.  Drugs, alcohol and the bursting of family values made most people chose the path of ‘every man for himself.’ Nothing seemed to be justifiable any longer from a community point of view.  Each time a step was put forward for the well-being of all, it was systematically destroyed by a principle rather poorly described as profitability.  Thus, an uncertain number of decision makers who wanted to protect their own interests, and those of a rich multinational company, did all they could to hide the truth to the ordinary concerned citizens.  That company was the owner of the sunken ship The Big Whale and, during election time, although it was never proven, it was a well known fact that companies of this type were having a very strong lobbying action in the government, and were also great providers of electoral funds.  It is only by chance that a group of individuals, concerned by the potential danger of that oil spill, discovered that this old cast hull contained more than a thousand gallons of PCBs in the heating system of the ship.  PCB is a very stable substance and highly carcinogenic to every living cell.  For reasons unknown, the government workers who investigated the accident more than two decades before never even mentioned that in their report.  Although it was almost inconceivable, no one could find the reason why such an important matter had been missing in the final report of that maritime accident. With great reinforcements of publicity and marketing, the Coast Guard was mandated to raise the sunken ship and the company owner of the sunken vessel was to be prosecuted thereafter. So, under intense monitoring, and with the least expensive means of the times, they lifted the vessel from its underwater grave.  The operation was risky and doubtful, but was presented like a success without precedent. Some journalists, carefully chosen for their so-called ‘objectivity’, were allowed to attend the operation. Surrounded by specialists in shipwrecks and pollution of all types, even the most critical of those journalists could only report on what the officials allowed them to see and photograph. Unfortunately, they were not underwater when the pipes of the vessel’s heating system burst and the contaminated oil escaped towards the depths of the Gulf.  The PCBs, being heavier than the water, sank to the bottom of the sea without any noticeable effects on the surface of the ocean.  The authorities even pushed the joke as far as inviting the President of the Fishermen’s Association from a nearby island, in order to have what they called a ‘credible and concerned’ witness of the operation. Even if that witness did not have a thorough knowledge of the problem, the authorities managed to get him to say to the local and international press that the layer of oil which he had seen, at the time of the raising of the barge, was barely equivalent to the oil film floating on the water each time he drained the engine of his own fishing vessel.”

“So, thousands of gallons of PCBs were released back into the marine environment and polluted, over the years, the crab population bordering the underwater site where the hull of The Big Whale had rested for more than twenty years.  This zone was declared a ‘Prohibited Fishing Zone’ for a time encompassing a radius of ten miles.  Away from that Zone, crab fishermen continued to fish the specie, even after they discovered that the crab population on the site was sixty times more PCB polluted than the rest of the fishing biomass.  The proven fact that a crab can travel an average of sixty marine miles per year across the ocean floor did not hold great importance in the decision controlling the limit of the area closed for fishing.  There was too much money and too many jobs at stake.  Even the fishermen, who should have been more concerned, didn’t want to know what the scientists had found.  A public and international investigation into this sad but real story would have had a major effect on the price of their catches, even if they were not being fished at the place of this piece of underwater wreckage. History will never say how many Islanders died of cancer because of this shipwreck.  The burden of proof is impossible, but let’s say that this event was only the beginning of the masquerade.”

CHAPITRE 4

On pouvait y lire : «DANGER. ANCIEN DÉPOTOIR.   MATIÈRES DANGEREUSES. SCAPHOFILTRE OBLIGATOIRE».

Chapter IV
The Following Day

The following day, after his course of historical TV-rectification, Albert found ASTER at the fast food restaurant Madeli Mac. After drinking their cola and eating some small pink biscuits coated with pink cream containing a concentrate of vitamins C, B12, B1, B2, E, potassium and magnesium, they took the laserbus to the great halt South of the Dunes, just as they had previously planned. Before getting out of the laserbus, ASTER put on  his filtersuit and checked his outside transmitter.  Grandfather Albert just went out with his casual clothes, consisting of a wrinkled shirt hanging over his jeans and a pair of old shoes.  The weather was hot, the air was heavy.  A glaucous and heavy sea touched the horizon; a light gray horizon, hardly sizeable, lost far away in a yellowish cloud of dust.  Even the sand was gray.  A sign forbade people to pass a certain line.  It was written “DANGER.  OLD DUMP. DANGEROUS MATTER.  FILTERSUIT MANDATORY.”

Albert said “Come here ASTER, but do not cross this line.  Let us go instead on the other side, in the caves.”

“Oh yes! I like the caves.  I have explored tons of them with the virtual-TV, each one more beautiful than the others, not like these anyway.  At school, the DVT (Digital Video Teacher) always insists to show us the beautiful caves and sandy beaches of the World . . .  those of the World before .  .  .  the Great Cataclysm” exclaimed Tony.
Albert sighed.  “You know ASTER, a long time ago, these caves were as beautiful as the ones shown to you by your DVT!”

“Those are old stories grandfather.  According to my federative teacher, the Islands were never really beautiful.  In any case, they are surely more comfortable and safer than before.  You often say yourself that the weather does not count any more” argued ASTER.

“NO ASTER!”

The old Albert had just shouted his impatience. In a refrained and desperate gesture, at the same time, he had raised his arms in the air and dropped them heavily on each side of his old, wounded body.  The little boy was surprised.  He was not accustomed to seeing his grandfather dominated by his emotions. So, it was that; to have emotions. He, whose DNA had been programmed so he could feel only certain, very specific emotions, was puzzled.  For example: The Federation had implanted in all of the children the “mathematical joy” gene, or the “anti-sorrow” gene, supposedly to protect them from the emotional devastation of the brain, as the rules were saying.  So ASTER did not know if he had to judge his grandfather like a weak creature, despicable or simply excusable; this being due to his old age and, especially due to the absence of genetic purification at the time of his conception.  Then, this interrogation dissipated from Tony’s mind as they entered under the arch of the large cave.  His transmitting set indicated to him that transmission was no longer possible, that the carbon monoxide was very high outside and the only transportation communication channel remaining was his audio transmitter hooked up to his filtersuit.

Grandfather Albert seemed to be very at ease in this environment.  Oh, he coughed violently, once he spit blood, and his breathing was slow and painful, but, as far as the filtersuit would have helped him, he used to say “for nothing in the world would I want to put that huge type of condom over my entire body, even if I had the right to wear one.”  His attitude was reassuring to the authorities, so they never felt concern about his choice.

Albert sat down on a rock, his face turned toward the opening of the cave, from where he could perceive the sea.  He seemed to look nowhere, except perhaps inside of himself. ASTER instinctively knew, in his special attitude, how serious the next words of his grandfather were going to be.

“You know Tony .  .  .”

“But I told you to not call me Tony anymore. I hate that name .  .  .”

“.  . .  no, stop that” said the old man firmly “and please don’t interrupt me. What I have to tell you is too important and, let me at least tell you why! I will never again call you ASTER, and you have the right to know why I’m doing this to you!”

To the surprise of the little boy, the old man’s eyes did not give any indication there was place for argument and even less for dispute.  In spite of the situation, Tony knew that his grandfather was begging him for his attention, more than giving him an order.  Still surprised by the odd behavior of his Pappy, the little boy said “yes” by a slight movement of his head, while still wondering whether it was the pollution which had already reached his grandfather’s brain.  Having nothing to lose, he thus decided to listen carefully.

With a voice choked by emotion, Albert then began.

“Your true name is really Tony, but before explaining all of that to you, let me tell you how it all started, well before your birth. Yes, it is true the Islands were quite different from those which you know today.  During the time of my youth, and a little later, just before the great disturbance, the sky was blue, the clouds were white, the sea was of  pure emerald.  By high winds, these winds that you are so afraid of during your virtual voyages, the seas would become as white as a bride’s dress.  The caves we are in right now were of an ochre color, a color we no longer see, especially when the sun cherished them with its rays. You know, the sun was not always man’s enemy.  He colored all of his passages, even the cold of Winter, with his set of shades and lights on the white snow.  During Summer, the grass and hay grew abundantly on the neighboring hills. Here and there were sheep, horses and cows peacefully grazing among the grass.  Of course, I am telling you about things which you can only imagine with great difficulty, without the aid of your virtual apparatus or the help of your DVT. Still, those things were much more beautiful than those which The Federation puts out in the central computer of the Library Bubble.  If you would only try to imagine the sand of our dunes.  Fine like sugar, golden like the ring of a bride.  In various places on this sand, grass was growing wild and willingly, and was so well- adapted to the rigors of our climate it acted like a super filter, protecting our underground water resource.

One day, some supposedly intelligent, worried and responsible individuals, who were then leaders of the society, nevertheless found good reason to install a dump with a waste treatment plant on top of this valuable underground water stream, located a few miles from where we are today.  It is hard to imagine that there was a time when everyone had their own well right beside their house.  Unfortunately, all that has been destroyed my dear Tony.”

CHAPITRE 3

Chapter 3
The Cataclysm

The Cataclysm:  Nobody seemed to be able to define it or to pinpoint exactly when it happened.  There had been no total nuclear war, but numerous inter-frontier conflicts.  It was also true, that some had used their restricted range nuclear weapons on several occasions.  Moreover, for still unknown reasons, the tectonic plates of the Continents had been very active and had caused many devastating earthquakes which spread out for many years.  Perhaps that is why no one could identify the “fatal moment.”  All that people could retain was, that in barely five years, everything seemed to come to a halt before falling into horror.  Billions of people disappeared due to all types of diseases.  The terrestrial temperature became unstable and hot almost everywhere on the globe and floods almost entirely covered many countries.
The beautiful blue sky of the planet became permanently covered and large, dark, gray clouds covered the Earth in such a thick layer that the Sun’s rays could no longer reach the soil.  The essential renewal of phytoplankton, which was the base of all the biomass food chain, died in a very short time.  The survivors of that tragedy owed their life to the construction of immense plastic bubbles under which one learned with time, to create an artificial life, extremely disciplined and managed with an iron fist, by an entity which no one could readily identify.

All these things happened at the same time as some started to make significant discoveries in genetics, then in medicine. In front of the disaster, the survivors agreed to subject themselves to only one world government.  The task had not been difficult.  All human survivors already had a microchip, similar to a “bar code” implanted in the under layer of skin on their forehead.  Invisible to the naked eye, this code allowed the optical readers, and scanners of all kinds, to identify the profile of each remaining individual on Earth at any given time.  The others, who had not been “tagged”.  .  .  for unknown reasons, had disappeared.  No one really knew who was in control.  All they knew was that an invisible and intangible force, enhanced by the projection of images and voices on the flat-faced screens of the buildings, was there to take care of humanity.  However, there was one condition with which everyone had to comply. All the humans who lived under those huge plastic domes, had to agree to serve the System without ever asking any questions.

The historical TV-rectification was dealing with every issue the “voices” were saying.  All things considered, people were nourished and collectively sheltered, but without knowing exactly from where that food and nourishment came and to whom they were obliged.  Only children born in the laboratories seemed to profit from a particular attention, and a very detailed agenda concerning their education, their social activities, and their civil and military training.  For the others, well, they were expected to behave properly and respect all the rules and regulations of society.  They were expected to be thankful just to be alive.  Those having a rebellious nature, like many other “non-tagged” persons, vanished without any explanation.  Even happiness, a concept rather badly defined by the “Internal Hard Drive Memory” (the “IHDM”), seemed to be more like an order than a state of mind. It was in that kind of historical context but also extremely real that Albert and ASTER.  .  .  or Tony, were living.

*(Next,) Albert and Tony go to "South of the Dune", "chapter 4" - next Monday April 13. Take care of all of you.

* Last paragraph of the April 7 publication
“Yes TONY, I will tell you all you want to know about the sun, the stars .  . .  and other wonderful things too, but not today.  I am tired Tony.  This long walk in the gray mud of Sandy Hook has exhausted me, I believe.”

PUBLICATION OF APRIL 9 (continuation and end of chapter 2)

The old Albert knew he had just offended the young boy.  Each time he called him "Tony,” his grandchild rebelled against him.

“My name is not Tony.  I prohibit you to call me by that name” firmly said the young boy, closing his fists as if he had difficulty to retain a gesture which he did not want to really make.

“Why do you always insist on calling me Tony?  My name is ASTER OO9.  My mother says that I was created by the genetic bank “B of M” and that my DNA was programmed so that I will be the most intelligent of the Islanders.  My father often says to me ‘You cost us so much in research; I hope the doctor didn’t get mixed-up with his test-tubes!’”

A little surprised by his grandchild’s overreaction to his last comment, Albert toned down his voice and said calmly to the young boy: “Okay ASTER, will you allow me to skip the 009?  It aggravates me to associate a number with your name.  Otherwise, I have the impression I am speaking to a calculator. Do you agree ASTER?”

The old man was looking right into ASTER’s eyes, but with great tenderness. The fact that they had named his descendant with a weird numbered identity made Albert furious, but he couldn’t explain that to the one he loved to call Tony.  For the old man, it was as if his grandson was walking out with a label glued on his forehead, and not a true human being with emotions and feelings. One way or another, he knew he had to accept that his grandson could be proud of wearing that “modern” identity even if he couldn’t understand the reason behind it.  Maybe it was time to tell ASTER why his grandfather insisted upon calling him Tony, but Albert couldn’t figure out how to tell him and mostly important why, without any preparation.

Pretending he was thinking over his grandfather’s suggestion, the young boy finally said, “Oh yes, I like that better.  All of my friends call me by that name.”

“Then ASTER, tomorrow we will go in the caves South of the Dunes, just after your course of historical TV-rectification .  . .  do you agree?” asked Albert.

“Ok Pappy! But this is dangerous, the air there is unbreathable.”
“No problem, you will carry your filtersuit.”

“But you, you do not have a filtersuit” worried Tony.  “The federative authorities do not give special suits to those who are more than fifty years old.”

Making a funny face, Albert responded “Ahhh, that does not bother me.  The bacteria, it likes me; the viruses too! Believe it or not, I speak to them every evening and I kick them out before going to sleep .  . .  and they all listen to me.”

The happy laugh of the young boy caused by Albert’s tomfoolery warmed the heart of the old man.  Fortunately, he could still count on the naivety of his grandson for him to tell, without the authorities knowing it, the true history of his own life. Indeed, Albert knew that the audio-censorship did not function when only one of the parties had a filtersuit. Moreover, they had not yet managed to solve the problem of the communication lost in the cliffs South of the Dunes.

“So, is tomorrow okay ASTER?” questioned Albert.

“Yes Pappy, and do not forget to connect yourself into the rest program.  It appears that old people sleep very well on that.”
“I will not forget young boy.  Have a great evening Ton .  . .  oops, I mean ASTER.”
As the little boy moved away on the laserbus, Albert, rather proud of himself, walked away to the old pensioner’s common room. He then put on his virtual helmet, slipped his old hands into the sensitive gloves of the computer, and sank into a deep sleep, where images of refreshing waterfalls and wild animals infiltrated his brain with the hypnotic sound of carefully chosen music.  The state in which the sleeping machine brought him always helped old Albert to forget, for a beneficial moment, the time of the Cataclysm.
